In Sunday’s 2-2 draw, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp cleared Jarell Quansah of any responsibility for the error that gave Manchester United an odd-manoeuvre equalizer.
Bruno Fernandes made it 1-1 with a first-time finish after Quansah’s sloppy pass to Virgil van Dijk found him inside the center circle. Caoimhin Kelleher was well outside of his goal.
Fernandes’ goal was United’s first in a match that saw Klopp’s team dominate, but they needed a late penalty from Mohamed Salah to salvage a tie after Erik ten Hag’s team had taken a 2-1 lead thanks to Kobbie Mainoo’s outstanding effort.
In light of Quansah’s error, Klopp chose not to chastise his inexperienced center defender instead advising him to steer clear of social media in the days ahead.
“As a Premier League football player representing Liverpool, I regret to inform you that this will not be his final error in life,” Klopp stated. “Life is like that. He handled it really well, in my opinion, and so did we. However, social media did not exist when our heroes’ blunders from the past occurred, so hopefully he is wise enough to turn that off.
“Do not take it personally and read the Daily Mail or any other place where people go during these trying times. It is all part of the game, and he handled it really well.”
“We want to play football, keep the ball, and play build-up,” Klopp continued. Although Bruno saw an opportunity to improve the situation and seized it, there have been worse mistakes in football that have gone unaddressed.
“It just happens; there is no blame or criticism of any kind. The best thing that can happen is that he will learn from it.”
After their draw, Liverpool is now tied with leaders Arsenal on 71 points but trails them by a better goal differential.
