Recent rumors about Liverpool state that the team is ready to make a move for Xabi Alonso. Pep Lijnders, meanwhile, may be joining Liverpool again for the forthcoming season.
Liverpool will return to action this weekend when Manchester City plays Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium as the title race heats up. They’re never too far from thinking about Jürgen Klopp’s successor, and Xabi Alonso might join the Reds shortly, according to insiders. This is a compilation of Liverpool’s most recent news.
Liverpool is “prepared” to acquire Alonso.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool will have to pay “the bank” for Xabi Alonso. The Bayer Leverkusen manager is currently the most sought-after manager in the football world, having ties to both the Reds and Bayern Munich.
Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp’s resignation means that both clubs won’t have managers come summertime. Alonso is still the frontrunner to take the lead at both, despite recent reports suggesting Bayern may have gained the upper hand in the battle to sign him.
Sky Sports revealed last week that if Alonso chose to leave Leverkusen, he would move to Munich rather than Liverpool. Football Insider claims that the Reds aren’t going to give up, though.
The paper claims that Liverpool is supposedly in private talks to establish a succession plan ahead of Klopp’s departure. Alonso will, nevertheless, have the last word in the situation, and Liverpool is supposedly conducting backup interviews with other applicants.
Lijnders has made the Ajax short list.
The ECHO claims that Pep Lijnders is being considered by Ajax to take over as the Dutch team’s head coach for the upcoming campaign. The 41-year-old is scheduled to depart Liverpool in the summer, following Jürgen Klopp out the door with his coaching staff.
It’s possible that Lijnders won’t be unemployed for very long. Ajax, who have been without a permanent manager since Maurice Steijn was fired in October, is reportedly considering him.
Since then, John van ‘t Schip has served as acting manager; however, Lijnders and Jordan Henderson, the former captain of Liverpool, may get back together in Amsterdam. The midfield player left Anfield last summer and signed with Ajax in January after spending a brief time in Saudi Arabia.
Lijnders, who has assisted Klopp since 2018, has previously stated that he wants to work in management. He has made hints that Vitor Matos, the elite development coach at Liverpool, would work as his assistant when he moves on to a new team.
