Rio Ferdinand was astounded by one Manchester United player’s physical condition.
Thirteen Manchester United players are currently away from the club, representing their respective nations, during the current international break.
Teenage talents Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have been the talk of the town this week, and on Tuesday night, they will make their international debuts for Argentina and England, respectively.
Still, a few players have stayed at Carrington all week, either because they weren’t selected or because they’re recovering from injuries.
The latter is true for Northern Ireland’s Jonny Evans, who hasn’t travelled to join his colleagues since he got a knock before the win against Liverpool.
In contrast, the center back was present to greet Rio Ferdinand upon his return to Carrington this week, during which the retiring defender bestowed some complimentary remarks upon him.
The amazing Rio Ferdinand Mr. Jonny Evans
Ferdinand and United’s technical director Darren Fletcher are shown welcoming Evans in a video shared on the official X account.
During their conversation, Ferdinand asked Evans, “How are you doing?”
Compared to your previous appearance, you look much better now.
He appears to be in better health!
Jonny Evans has saved United this season
When Evans returned to the team in the summer as a free agent, nobody could have predicted that he would have played as much as he has.
Bringing in some seasoned backup was a wise decision, since it allowed the signing of a high-profile center-back to wait another year, but it has now proven to be a crucial addition.
All season long, Erik ten Hag’s team has been decimated by injuries, with the defense taking a particularly heavy toll.
Tyrell Malacia has not played a minute of the season, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw have missed the bulk of it, and Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have all missed substantial chunks of it.
The 36-year-old Evans has had to play 24 times this season since his alternatives are frequently so restricted. Much more than he ought to.
Who knows who would have occupied the back position if he hadn’t been present?
He hasn’t let United down when he has played, at least thanks to his excellent form.
