With the support of Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham overcame his La Liga suspension to go to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
After an hour, the England star enchanted Vinicius Junior with a fantastic assist.
And even though Real Madrid won the first leg 1-0 in Germany, Leipzig responded immediately through captain Willi Orban, and it was enough to advance on the basis of the total.
Bellingham will now miss Madrid’s next two league games against Osasuna and Celta Vigo as a result of a two-match ban for his inappropriate behaviour on Saturday in Valencia.
After his last-gasp winner was chalked off in the 2-2 draw, the 20-year-old yelled angrily several times, according to the official match report from the referee.
Bellingham was also fined £513, but Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti declared prior to the Leipzig match that the team will file an appeal against his “unfair” penalty.
It’s safe to say that Ancelotti did not have a good day on Wednesday since he was involved in a tax fraud controversy that may result in his imprisonment.
Although they dominated the field in a lacklustre first half, his team at least crossed the finish line in this second leg of the playoffs.
Bellingham was left out in the cold as Ancelotti made the needless decision to use only Vinicius Jr. as an all-out attacker and an additional midfielder.
Leipzig had plenty of opportunities to score, but was unable to do so as striker Lois Openda missed a hatful of shots.
During halftime, Real Madrid’s disgruntled supporters let out angry whistles, and Ancelotti acknowledged his error and substituted Rodrygo for Edouard Camavinga.
Soon after the break, Real goalie Andriy Lunin made a huge mistake when racing out, giving Openda sight of an open goal, although from a narrow angle, but the Belgian was unable to convert.
After sixty-three minutes, the home team managed to obtain a shot on goal through substitute Rodyrgo, but Peter Gulacsi, a former Hereford keeper, blocked his effort.
And they had their opener, almost predictably, two minutes later.
After gaining the ball, Toni Kroos passed it to Bellingham, who sprinted up the pitch and threaded a brilliant pass through for Vinicius to score.
That appeared to be that at first glance. However, three minutes later, Orban headed home David Raum’s cross to tie the score for Leizpig.
Via Openda and Orban, the visitors had further opportunities, but they were unable to seize them. It was injury time when Dani Olmo hit the bar.
Real was nervous but managed to win; yet, Bellingham and company will realise they were really fortunate not to lose.
The midfielder for Real Madrid, Kroos, stated: “Playing style matters more than outcome.
We weren’t happy with our play at the interval, but we were happy with the outcome.
“The second half improved a little bit, but not enough to guarantee that we’ll go to the next round. Despite our lacklustre performance, we managed to advance to the quarterfinals.”
Toni Rudiger, a former Chelsea defender, was also forthright: “We suffered a lot.” We didn’t play well, and they did. Easy.
We lacked focus, were sluggish, and showed little passion. We failed to complete the challenges, and failing to do so could result in punishment in the Champions League.
We don’t celebrate this match since, in the end, it wasn’t a great performance, but we’re done.
Additionally, manager Ancelotti acknowledged: “It was a poorly executed game with minimal focus and effort.
“The mental aspect made the difference, it influenced us a lot” .
“We’re talking about something that happened in 2015 because they think I was resident here,” he said in response to a question concerning tax evasion allegations.
