SALAH’S JOURNEY: From a four-hour bus ride to a peak career as Liverpool’s new legend

Unpainted structures and mounds of construction materials make up the backdrop to a grassy courtyard. Dispersed patches of grass and splintered goalposts make up the pitch. Teens chasing a yellow ball sprint barefoot. The vibrant shirts and the breathtaking artwork by Mohamed Salah are the sole sources of colour in this desolate desert hamlet.

A son of working-class parents, Salah set intended to become a professional football player soon after his birth in the Nile delta town of Nagrig, which is located approximately 80 miles from Cairo. Two of Egypt’s top clubs, Al Ahly and Zamalek, were Salah’s ideal teams. Salah would spend countless hours in the dark attempting to mimic the stunning women he watched on TV, especially Francesco Totti and Zinedine Zidane, because of his immense admiration for them.

The scout who enrolled Salah in the Al Mokawloon academy witnessed him play in a 2006 competition for Ittihad Basyoun, his hometown team. Despite being only fourteen years old, Salah would commute to and from Cairo for training daily using four or five cars. It was a five-hour journey. Salah put in a lot of time and effort, and coach Mohamed Radwan could see his potential. As a result, he was promoted to the first team. Rapid dietary and training adjustments were made by Radwan to get Salah in the same physical shape as the larger players. In his early years, he excelled as a fullback and had a knack for finding open areas in the opposing defence. Salah started every game in 2011–12 after being moved to striker and quickly became an integral component of the squad.

Tragic riots at Port Said Stadium forced the suspension of the Egyptian Premier League. The domestic season for Salah ended prematurely as a result of this. In a friendly match, Swiss club FC Basel defeated Egypt’s U-23 team 4-3, with goals from Salah and another player shortly after. Club head Bernhard Heusler requested Salah to stay for a trial after he impressed him. He proceeded to ink a four-year contract. Salah initially struggled to adapt to life in Switzerland because to his language barrier and the high expectations placed on him to succeed Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka, two Swiss superstars. After getting off to a slow start, the Egyptian winger scored the game-winning goals that lifted Basel to their seventh consecutive league championship.

Chelsea F.C. continued their tradition of excellent African players in the Premier League when they paid 11 million euros to get Salah in January 2014. Salah saw limited action and was often benched throughout José Mourinho’s tenure as manager. The Ivorian superstar Didier Drogba, who was older than him, became his teammate. Salah was loaned out to Italian club Fiorentina by Chelsea in February of the subsequent year for a period of 18 months. The now-famous Salah embarrassed multiple Italian defenders with his blazing speed and inherent goal-scoring ability. All eyes were on the Egyptian after his goals against Juventus and Inter Milan. Salah passed up Florence for a loan to A.S. Roma after a stellar season with the Rome club. With Salah’s 15 goals, Roma finished third in 2015–16, only behind Napoli and Juventus, and they advanced to the Champions League. With a four-point deficit against Juventus the following year, Roma finished in second place. They reached the finals of the Champions League. A wise decision was to substitute in Francesco Totti, a club veteran and a youth hero of Salah’s, for Salah in his final game. Nineteen goals had been scored by Totti for the team.

Liverpool F.C. can claim Salah as their first-ever Egyptian player. In the summer of 2017, the club paid a club record 34.3 million euros to acquire him. Salah personified manager Jürgen Klopp’s high-intensity “Gegenpressing” style, therefore Liverpool fans were anticipating a thrilling game. To claim that Salah had a fantastic debut season would be a huge understatement. He surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Premier League record of 31 goals in 38 appearances with 32 goals. Thanks in large part to Salah, Liverpool advanced to the Champions League final. In addition to being named PFA Players’ Player of the Year, he also won the Golden Boot. Even though the Spanish centre defender Sergio Ramos famously wounded Mohamed Salah, Real Madrid still won the game. Salah captained Egypt during their brief 2018 World Cup run in Russia despite suffering from a shoulder injury throughout the summer.

Going forward Salah has been compared to Leo Messi due to his recent play, particularly his hat trick in a 5-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, following three fantastic years in which he won the Premier League and the UCL. Despite all the accolades, the “Egyptian king,” as he is referred to at Anfield, has not lost touch with his heritage. Churches, schools, and hospitals were constructed by Salah in Nagrig. Because of these, young Arabs are starting to believe in a brighter future. When the epidemic hit, Salah donated to an organisation that distributed emergency oxygen supply to those in need. After scoring a fantastic goal, Salah always kneels and lowers his forehead as a respectful approach to demonstrate his Islamic beliefs. Salah transcends the confines of his role as the leading striker for Liverpool in a world where prejudice and racism abound. Unity, hope, and commitment are his values, and he demonstrates the value of every person’s unique character.
