The 34th Africa Cup of Nations begins on January 13 in Ivory Coast, with 24 nations competing for the largest prize in African football.

Seven times champions Egypt will be hoping to add to their seven AFCON titles, and they have been drawn in Group B with Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

Egypt will rely on a roster that combines youth with the experience of goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, Mohamed Elneny, Ahmed Hegazi, and captain Mo Salah.

The Liverpool striker is the most experienced member of the group, having earned nearly 90 caps in 12 years with the national side.

Rui Vitoria’s side play Mozambique in Abidjan on Sunday, 14 January, and then face Ghana four days later in their toughest group stage test. Mo Salah and company will then conclude Group B action against Cape Verde on Monday, 22 January, as Egypt completes the group stage.

If Egypt wins the competition in Ivory Coast, they will face the final on 11 February in Abidjan, with the Reds lacking their top player for probably more than a month.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of Salah’s absence, “Do you want to play without Mo, no.” But we always find a way to get through this moment, and I’m confident we will.”
