Diogo Jota has drawn criticism for the incident after winning a contentious late penalty to help Liverpool defeat Newcastle and increase their advantage at the top of the Premier League.
Diogo Jota, the Portugal international who won a late penalty for Liverpool against Newcastle, was called “embarrassing” by Alan Shearer.
With just seven minutes remaining in the Premier League match, the Reds forward outran the Magpies’ defense with a pass that split them wide open and went around keeper Martin Dubravka. Jota, however, stumbled as he went past the Newcastle keeper and claimed that Dubravka’s hands had tripped him.
The Newcastle player was immediately booked by referee Anthony Taylor, who pointed to the penalty spot. The hosts won 4-2 and moved three points clear of the leaders in the standings as Mohamed Salah stepped up to bury his penalty into the goal.
.
Shearer, a legendary player for the Magpies, was incensed by the ruling and insisted that Jota had tricked the referee. He tweeted the phrase “What a great dive that is” along with two emojis of laughing faces.
The legendary Arsenal player Ian Wright expressed his perplexity with Jota’s decision to go down searching for a penalty when there was an open goal glaring at him. Wright tweeted: “I’d sooner give up a goal than shoot into an empty net! Observed everything!”
Shearer then unleashed a vicious attack on Jota, tweeting the word “embarrassing” in response to Wright’s remark. Salah’s subsequent penalty kick completed an exciting victory for the league leaders, but Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told Sky Sports that it wasn’t fair. It’s not a penalty in my opinion.
