PLAYER RATINGS: Diogo Jota’s Return and Darwin Nunez’s Goal Break End Drought as Reds Claim Top Spot with Victory Against Clarets at Turf Moor

At Turf Moor, Jurgen Klopp’s team dominated, but they were unable to seal the victory until the very end, losing 2-0.

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against Burnley—a victory that was much closer than it should have been considering how much the Reds dominated their hosts—moved them back to the top of the Premier League standings for at least the next 48 hours.

After a 12-match drought, Darwin Nunez ended it with a fantastic 20-yard strike inside the opening ten minutes. This proved to be the game-winner. After that, Jurgen Klopp’s team attacked nonstop but was unable to score a second goal to make them feel better.

James Trafford, the custodian for Burnley, produced a number of outstanding saves, Mohamed Salah hit the crossbar, and goals disallowed to Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo before halftime. Burnley enjoyed brief periods of pressure on the other end, but they were never able to put Alisson Becker to the test. Diogo Jota, who had been out since the summer, came off the bench to secure the victory with a goal from a tight angle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool 2023-24

Goalkeeper & Defence

Alisson Becker (6/10):

Liverpool go top as Nunez ends drought to sink Burnley - New Vision Official

A spectator for much of the game. One misplaced pass apart, he didn’t put a foot wrong when he was called upon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10):

Couldn’t quite get into the game from a creative point of view as he has in recent weeks. Had a couple of dodgy defensive moments, too.

Jarell Quansah (7/10):

Another assured showing from the youngster, even if he wasn’t tested that much aside from one spell in the second half.

Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Virgil Van Dijk: Burnley Win An “Important Three Points” - The Liverpool Offside

Exuded class throughout. His mere presence seems to intimidate opposition forwards.

Joe Gomez (7/10):

Filled in admirably at left-back as Burnley targeted his side to launch attacks. Got forward well to support attacks, too.

Harvey Elliott Liverpool 2023-24

Midfield

Harvey Elliott (7/10):

An energetic presence in midfield. Unfortunate to have a fine goal disallowed early in the second half before being replaced shortly after.

Wataru Endo (5/10):

Broke up play at times but still doesn’t do enough with the ball when he gets on it, especially against lesser teams. Poor pass almost gifted Burnley a late equaliser.

Ryan Gravenberch (6/10):

Showed good poise in midfield but lacked a bit of cutting edge. Still waiting for his breakout Premier League performance.

Cody Gakpo Liverpool 2023-24

Attack

Mohamed Salah (4/10):

Struggling to have the same overall impact as he was earlier in the season. Cut a frustrated figure at times.

Darwin Nunez (7/10):

Superb finish broke the deadlock early. Unlucky that a couple of other nice touches around the box didn’t come off, but was much brighter than his attacking colleagues.

Cody Gakpo (7/10):

Excellent in build-up play, particularly in creating Nunez’s opener. Will wonder how he didn’t get on the scoresheet after missing a host of first-half chances and having a fine strike disallowed.

Jurgen Klopp Liverpool 2023-24

Subs & Manager

Curtis Jones (6/10):

On for the final quarter of the game and maintained some energy in midfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai (5/10):

Left out for the first time in the Premier League all season and missed a great chance to seal the points shortly after coming on.

Luis Diaz (5/10):

Pretty quiet after replacing Gakpo down the left, though did force Trafford into a late save.

Diogo Jota (7/10):

His late return will be a huge boost as Liverpool’s forwards have faltered without him, and he showed what he can do with his fine late finish.

Jurgen Klopp (6/10):

Freshened his team up and Nunez repaid him for bringing him back into the line-up. Still needs to figure out a way to get more out of his forward line.
