When Martin Odegaard of Arsenal was allowed to get away with a handball, Jurgen Klopp screamed, “How can you say that’s not a penalty?”
The Premier League championship contenders drew 1-1 in a thrilling contest on Saturday night at Anfield.
But Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, couldn’t figure out why his squad couldn’t win all three points.
Arsenal took the lead after just four minutes thanks to a strong header from defender Gabriel Magalhaes.
That’s when referee Chris Kavanagh rejected Liverpool’s demand of a golden penalty.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected free kick spun in Martin Odegaard’s direction, the captain of the Gunners.
And it seemed clear that the ball touched Odegaard’s palm before bouncing off of him and away from Liverpool’s Mo Salah as he staggered a little.
The Anfield crowd, along with the Reds’ stars, screamed for a penalty as Odegaard meekly carried on playing.
Following Kavanagh’s ongoing participation, a comprehensive VAR analysis concluded that it was not apparent.
“The penalty situation is a weird situation,” said Klopp following Salah’s incredible first-half equaliser to square the game.
“You look at it, and I’m not sure how you can say it’s not a penalty. I don’t know if the referee can see it.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold went on, “From a Liverpool perspective, that’s always going to be a handball.” We didn’t end up with the best option, for whatever reason.
We probably scored a second goal as a result of that, which helped us tie the score.
“We consider it a punishment, but the outcome wasn’t what we expected.”
Commentator Gary Neville called Odegaard “lucky” and claimed that his life was saved by his saving slip.
However, Sky Sports watchers were perplexed.
