The Mancunian and Chanel’s wealthiest international clientele came together on Thursday, sparking a clash of civilizations.

The event began on Wednesday with the arrival of visitors for a whirlwind tour of Manchester’s culture and history, and it concluded on Thursday night with the Chanel Métiers d’Art fashion show.

Black limos carrying American and Southeast Asian visitors have taken over Manchester, ferrying them from one restored Victorian warehouse to another as local tour guides serve them Vimto and regale them with tales of Cottonopolis, the city’s name during the height of its textile industry. These days, businesses who expand their events internationally have an obligation to improve the local economy and community. The free exhibition Manchester Modern: Past, Future, and Present was sponsored by Chanel. All of the slots were taken.

Many record covers for Manchester’s Factory Records were created by graphic designer and company co-founder Peter Saville. The Manchester/Chanel takeover took eight months to arrange, with participation from Manchester-based luminaries such as poet John Cooper Clarke and singer Jeanette Winterson.
