Paul Scholes feels that Ramus Hojlund’s poor play is partly due to Manchester United’s significant issue with “selfish” wingers Alejandro Garnacho and Antony.
Following a terrible group stage campaign that culminated in a lackluster 1-0 loss at home to Bayern Munich, United was eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The nightlong bullying of Hojlund by Dayot Upamecano and Kim min-Jate, Bayern’s center-half duo, prevented United from creating any meaningful openings.
Antony and Garnacho maintained their spots in the starting lineup for the third straight game after Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were ruled out due to illness.
Scholes was not pleased with United’s offensive display and felt sorry for Hojlund because of the lack of inventiveness displayed by United’s wide players.
“The center forward is my biggest concern,” Scholes said to TNT Sport.
He cannot be given a chance by us. Although he has five goals in the Champions League, he hasn’t scored any goals in the league as of yet. He didn’t have a chance tonight, and I don’t believe he did on Saturday either.
“Where the goals are coming from is a big concern.” Although Antony and Garnacho, your wide players, are highly self-centered players, you expect them to be creative.
“Those are players thinking about scoring their own goals, scoring themselves, not players looking up.”
Erik ten Hag also felt sorry for his young striker following a difficult encounter with Bayern’s defense.
In his press conference following the game, the United manager stated, “He scored five goals in the Champions League.”
He must accept this since it’s a tremendous performance from him. He has that. It’s also related to how we attacked those games.
He needs to carry this momentum into the Premier League. That is excellent, but he faced a formidable opponent today and did not create many opportunities.
