Gerrard made his first-team debut for Liverpool on 29 November 1998 as a late substitute in a Premier League match against Blackburn Rovers. He made thirteen appearances in his debut season, replacing injured captain Jamie Redknapp in central midfield.

After leaving MLS team the LA Galaxy earlier this month, Steven Gerrard has formally announced the end of his 19-year playing career.

The 36-year-old Englishman played for his native Liverpool for 17 seasons, making 710 games and winning 114 caps for his country.

When the Reds hosted Blackburn in the Premier League during the 1998–1999 season, Gerrard made his Liverpool debut.

But Stevie G didn’t truly establish himself on the Anfield team until the 1999–2000 campaign, when he moved from right midfield to a central position and flourished after learning how to manage his jitters.

When he made his debut in May 2000 against Ukraine, the England setup quickly became aware of his dynamic play, which was both robust in the tackle and endowed with a deadly right boot.

It was a genuinely spectacular season for Gerrard and Liverpool in 2000–01.

The midfielder assisted the Reds in winning the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield—a remarkable five trophies in only a single year.

Following his rapid rise to prominence on Merseyside, Gerrard was named captain in 2003 by then-manager Gerard Houllier, who replaced Sami Hyypia and credited the Frenchman for his outstanding leadership abilities.

The Reds captain was constantly being linked to a move to Chelsea, so it seemed like Gerrard’s future was not at Anfield.

But Gerrard stuck with his childhood team, starting a new chapter at Liverpool in 2004 under new manager Rafa Benitez.

In his first season in charge, Benitez assisted Liverpool in achieving their greatest success of the Premier League era, and Gerrard was crucial in helping the team win the Champions League.

With only a few minutes remaining, Gerrard scored what is possibly the most memorable goal of his career, saving the team from elimination in the group stage against Olympiakos with three goals in the second half.

The midfielder sent the Kop into raptures with a twisting 20-yard shot, sending them into the knockout stages.

After overcoming teams like Chelsea, Juventus, and Bayer Leverkusen to get to the championship game, Gerrard was the driving force behind a further three-goal comeback in the second half of the “Miracle of Istanbul.”

With a header early in the second half, the England player cut the lead to just two goals. After the game was level, he moved to right-back to support the defense, and the Reds would go on to defeat one of the all-time greatest AC Milan lineups on penalties.

One year later, Gerrard was back to his best, defeating West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup to win the ‘Gerrard Final’.

He scored twice, including an amazing 30-yard goal while experiencing cramps to tie the score at 3-3, and then he won another thrilling spot-kick match by scoring Liverpool’s third penalty.

The Reds had some success even though they were never able to win the Premier League—they came very close in 2013–14 when Gerrard famously slipped against Chelsea.

Along with some individual achievements, such as being included in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2014 to go along with his 2009 FWA Footballer of the Year award, the Reds also won the League Cup in 2011–12.

In the 2005 Champions League match against AC Milan, known as the “Miracle of Istanbul,” Steven Gerrard famously guided his team to victory.

Gerrard made a huge impression on the world stage in 2001 when he scored the second goal in England’s crushing 5-1 victory over Germany in Munich.

After the World Cup debacle, he went on to make 114 appearances, which is the fourth-most in the history of the nation, and score 21 goals until retiring in 2013.

After a year, Gerrard changed his ways and eventually left Liverpool to start over in America.

He signed with the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer, where he played for the final two years of his playing career, making 34 appearances and scoring five goals.
