The two teams’ long-running animosity was on full display in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier, with 22 yellow cards issued in the first half alone.

However, bɾаwls broke out in the stands between supporters of Argentina and Brazil 27 minutes before kickoff, delaying the start of the match.

It was a fiercely-contested encounter, with 22 fouls committed in the opening 45 minutes alone

Thus, Albiceleste captain Messi retreated to the locker room with his team to collect themselves following the surprising start, only to return to find a disgruntled Rodrygo waiting for them.

Upon hearing Messi’s decision to leave the field, the Real Madrid star wasted no time in approaching the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and telling him precisely what he thought.

The 22-year-old remarked, “You are acting like cowards. Don’t you want to play the game?” during their conversation.

Messi warned the younger Brazil star to 'watch his mouth' ahead of kick-off on Tuesday

“How are we cowards when we are the World Champions?” Messi got right back to them. ‘Be careful what you say, youngster.’

‘Now let’s look at the game, you’ll see us there.’ Rodrygo fired back, indicating something was still missing.

Messi, who had the last word in the heated dispute, said, “Let’s see, come on, come on.”

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner claimed his side returned to the field to 'make the situation more clam'.

In the 63rd minute, Argentina’s veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi scored a thunderous header from a Giovani Lo Celso corner, giving his team the victory.

Messi, on the other hand, was largely ineffective in the first half due to the dominance of Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes at center defense; however, he would make a bigger impact in the second half.
