The two were involved in a duel for the ball before Sane reacted furiously by lashing out at the Austrian international at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

Referee Slavko Vincic was left with little choice but to hand the former Manchester City star the first red card of his 402-game professional career.

Former Premier League player Marko Arnautovic had to comfort the winger as he was leaving the scene.

The former Stoke City and West Ham player had a good deal of drama while playing in the Premier League.

He got sent off for the Hammers after becoming enraged with Southampton, to name one instance.

Fans were quick to react to the moment on social media.

One commented: “Ludicrous from Leroy Sane. Clear red. And he’s now having to be calmed down by MARKO ARNAUTOVIC.”

A second posted: “Absolute scenes.”

A third joked: “Made even better by the fact Marko Arnautovic isn’t even on the pitch.

“He’s had to come from the subs bench to calm him down. Quite funny really.”

A fourth said: “The irony.”

Another added: “Arnautović has a calming effect on Sané.

“This football year probably couldn’t get any more absurd for the German national team.”

After goals from RB Leipzig star Christoph Baumgartner and former Manchester United loanee Marcel Sabitzer, Germany lost the friendly 2-0.
