In Tuesday’s South American World Cup qualifier, Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 thanks to a brilliant header from Nicolas Otamendi in the second half. Play didn’t resume until after calm had been established before the visitors, led by captain Lionel Messi, stormed off the field.
Because the Brazilian players kept fouling, neither team was able to get any momentum in the first half. Cristiano Romero of Tottenham Hotspur denied the hosts an early goal late in the first half when he stopped Gabriel Martinelli’s attempt from crossing the line.
The second half was considerably more entertaining to watch as both teams tried to take the lead. Following a one-on-one stop by Emiliano Martinez, Otamendi scored a spectacular header from Giovani Lo Celso’s corner in the 63rd minute. Then, with the Maracana crowded, Argentina secured the victory once more in the 81st minute, reducing Brazil to ten men. Due to the outcome, Brazil slid to sixth place and is no longer certain to qualify, while the World Champions are once again at the top of the qualifying table with 15 points from 6 games.
