After an otherwise dismal performance, the Al-Nassr great scored his 128th goal in international football to steal victory.
.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first goal in Portugal’s 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein, saving an otherwise shaky showing for his country. The Selecao outshot their opponents 29-5 and kept a clean sheet, but this was by no means a polished performance. Martinez’s team will believe that this should have been a far more comfortable victory because they frequently struggled to create opportunities.
Portugal didn’t produce much in the first half, frequently being thwarted by the hosts’ meticulous defensive structure. Despite having 14 shots overall, the Selecao only managed four on goal in the first half. At stoppage time in the second half, Ronaldo came the closest, putting a shot straight at Benjamin Buchel.
The first goal by the captain was a bit of a throwback, as the winger darted down the left channel and sent a shot past the defenseless goalkeeper. Shortly after, Joao Cancelo added another, looping home a beautiful finish following a mistake by Buchel. To finish off a somewhat unpleasant evening, Goncalo Ramos was declared out with a third.
Portugal ought to have facilitated this more. The Selecao shouldn’t have needed to find the net for so long, or waited so long to take the lead after it, given that there are almost 200 places separating these two teams in the FIFA rankings. Nevertheless, this was essentially a tryout for a team that might be in the running to make some noise next summer, especially if their star player is still leading the line, with Euro 2024 qualification secured.
