Darwin. Luis Suarez was told to reach out to fellow countryman Nunez, who is having a successful run with Liverpool after a tumultuous first season in English football.
After collecting a red card for a “headbutt,” Nunez had a difficult time adjusting to life at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp was left wanting more from him overall.
After a season together, Klopp has lauded his No. 9 for his “exceptional” defensive application and game connection, two attributes he had previously mentioned wanting to see from his players.
Suarez, whom Nunez admires, has been there for the 24-year-old since he arrived at Anfield. The former No. 7 has received a few “warnings” and has had to adapt to the deceitful tactics used in English football.
After a game against AUF TV, Suarez reportedly told ESPN Uruguay that he “has potential, technical ability, and physical power that he is demonstrating.”
Even when he was having trouble in Liverpool the year before, as a coworker, I knew. I gave him fair warning and filled him in on the ins and outs of English football when we last spoke. He opened up to me about what was going through his mind at the time, and we talked about it.
With Suarez back on the Uruguayan team after being recalled by Marcelo Bielsa, the two will have more time to bond and learn from one another. But Nunez has claimed Suarez’s old No. 9 jersey, so he won’t be able to wear it anymore.
I asked him to take the national team’s number nine jersey with him when I left. After some scuffles in Uruguay, Suarez said of the No. 9 shirt, “That’s why, if you listen to Darwin’s statements, he says it with total sincerity.”
“These are things that we are happy about as teammates; we are different, we are from different generations, and I am happy for the moment that he is experiencing in his club and in the national team,” I said to him as a teammate before the Brazil game.
Gremio is making a surprising run at the championship thanks in large part to the efforts of Luis Nunez, whose “bad time in Liverpool” has been replaced by seven goals and five assists this season, and Luis Suarez, who just scored a hat trick in as few as 19 minutes.
