Pre-Match
Liverpool is in fine form heading into this game, and a victory would put them only two points behind Manchester City. Joe Gomez replaces Kostas Tsmikas at left back in Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup, the only change from last week. After spending the previous two weeks tending to personal affairs, it’s great to have Luis Diaz back on the bench for the team.
First Half
It’s hard to imagine a first half with less action from Liverpool’s point of view. Whether due to carelessness or just falling behind the tempo, the Reds failed to make the most of their scoring opportunities. Luton and their supporters become more upbeat as time went on. While the Mad Hatters didn’t pose much of a threat, they did gain confidence as the half progressed.
If you’re searching for a bright spot from the first half, look no farther than Darwin Nunez. In the first half, he had 10 pass attempts and 6 shots. The finest opportunity of the game, he missed the post as well.
Second Half
Luton continued their tight defensive play in the second half, as Liverpool unable to make any headway against them. A chant for the victims of the Hillsborough catastrophe could be heard from the crowd in the 60th minute, shown live on television. Luton Town as a football club should be ashamed to have such a repulsive chant heard at their stadium.
In the 65th minute, Luton mounts its best chance of the game thanks to a brilliant counter attack, but Alisson Becker makes a spectacular stop to keep the score knotted. Immediately after the attack, Klopp made a triple replacement, replacing Dominik Szoboszlai, Joe Gomez, and Diogo Jota with Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott, and Tsmikas.
Liverpool thought to get a breakthrough in the 70th minute but both Mo Salah and Nunez have massive misses in the short of seconds. It was in the 75th minute when Klopp was cautioned for leaving his technical area.
In the 80th minute, Luton scores their first ever goal as Tahith Chong heads in a cross from Issa Kabore. But in the 95th minute, it’s LUIZ DIAZ of all people who pulls off a miracle to tie the game. After scoring, he removes his undershirt as a tribute to his dad.
Final Thoughts
That was terrible. A lot of work, and it’s not good. Don’t repeat that mistake again; Liverpool. While any point is better than none, the Reds need to be in the lead.
