After losing to Real Madrid last weekend, Barcelona traveled to the Basque country to play at Real Sociedad’s Reale Arena.
Xavi’s side knew they’d struggle against Sociedad, but the hosts dominated from the start and held them back.
Barcelona was confused in the first half, failed to escape their midfield, and allowed four shots on goal by halftime.
After being down for 88 minutes, Barcelona woke up and created a flurry of opportunities, which Ronald Araujo scored to win the game.
Marc-Andre Stegen: 8
Kept Barcelona in the game early with some great saves. He made some risky passes, which fueled La Real’s pressure.
Ronald Araujo: 8
Araujo had to handle Ander Barrenetxea on the wing, who challenged him. Though caught in possession several times.
However, scored the winning goal unexpectedly and deserved a thousand praises.
Jules Kounde: 5
After returning from injury, Kounde was sloppy on and off the ball. He conceded many chances to Sociedad, including a near-goal early on. He was also lucky not to be penalized.
Inigo Martinez: 7.5
Due to his Athletic Club loyalty, Inigo was booed at every touch, but he didn’t let it bother him. Provided support for Balde and was the finest defender tonight, denying Sociedad any room on his half.
Joao Cancelo: 5
He was gone too long and didn’t make a difference when he returned. Was removed around an hour.
Gavi: 7.5
Gavi, Barcelona’s greatest player again, pursued Sociedad strikers into his area and defended like a centre-back. Several attacks failed due to lack of assistance.
Ilkay Gundogan: 6.5
Shocking performance from Gundogan, whose statements after the Barcelona match seem ineffective. Made many mistakes on the edge of the box and failed to handle Sociedad’s press.
His last-minute pass was perfect for Barcelona, as Araujo headed home a diving header.
Fermin Lopez: 4
A weak Barcelona team limited Fermin’s impact.
Alejo Balde: 4
Made a few left-wing darting dashes, but had more defensive tasks today and struggled. Luckily, Gavi and Inigo protected him.
Robert Lewandowski: 2
Due to poor service, Lewandowski had 12 touches and completed four passes today.
Joao Felix 5
Got going at the close of the first half and the start of the second, but too late.
SUBSTITUTES:
Pedri 5
Came in to give midfield depth, but Sociedad’s better-drilled team overran him.
Ferran Torres: 6.5
More engaged than Lewandowski and generated more opportunities. Did not capitalize on an 88th-minute chance to score or assist the winner.
Raphinha: 6
Did well to add attacking flair, winning a couple set pieces, but nothing came of it.
