Liverpool continued their strong start to the Premier League season with a 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest on Sunday at Anfield.
After Matt Turner made a stop from Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota pounced on the rebound to put the Reds ahead.
Soon after, Nunez added his own name to the scoresheet as he buried a close-range finish from a Dominik Szoboszlai cross.
In the 77th minute, Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool’s third goal by rolling the ball into an empty net after Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner mishandled the ball.
The Egyptian’s goal finished off a successful afternoon for Jürgen Klopp’s squad and made him only the third player in the club’s history to score in each of the first five home league matches of a season.
Team News
Only Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch, Jota, and Nunez remained from Thursday night’s triumph over Toulouse, as Liverpool made seven changes to their starting lineup.
There were also Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch (Elliott 58), Jota (Gakpo 58), Salah, Nunez (Endo 79), and Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (Gomez 88).
First half
Liverpool opened off at Anfield looking to make it three straight wins at home within a week.
The home team started well, and after four minutes Nunez almost scored after a Salah ball over the top, but Turner was able to make a diving save.
Then, Jota missed the target on a header from a corner, putting the ball into the turf and into the hands of the away goalie.
However, the forest was firmly protecting itself. Salah almost found Gravenberch open for a close-range shot with a ball around the corner, but Willy Boly got in the way.
On 29, Salah sent Nunez racing into space inside the box, giving the Reds their finest chance of the match up to that point. Turner blocked his low, in-swinging shot from the near post.
After that, the No. 9 planted a stronger header from the middle of the box that went well over the crossbar off of the ensuing corner.
However, the stress was too much for them at the 30-minute mark. Just within the Liverpool half, Alexis Mac Allister recovered the ball to initiate a counterattack that ended with Salah setting up Nunez with a pass. His hard slap across the face of goal was blocked by Turner, but Jota was there to swat in the loose ball.
The striker sprinted to the side of the field, where he proudly displayed a jersey displaying his friend Luis Diaz’s name.
Soon after number one would be number two. On the right side, Szoboszlai and Salah passed the ball back and forth until the former cut the ball back from the touchline, setting up Nunez for a close-range hammer.
Before the half, Turner had already been forced to make two rapid saves, one each against Gravenberch and Szoboszlai.
Second half
Liverpool scored twice in the first half to take a commanding lead, and the first few minutes of the second half were a continuation of that dominance.
Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo were substituted in shortly before the hour mark, and Elliott was immediately engaged, with an attempt on goal being diverted behind by Ola Aina.
Then, Salah sent a free-kick from a promising position over the crossbar, while Forest missed a chance to close the gap when Nicolas Domnguez failed to properly connect with a Morgan Gibbs-White cross inside the penalty area.
In the last minutes, however, Salah capitalized on Turner’s misread of the bounce of a long ball forward from Szoboszlai to score. The Egyptian rolled the ball in from 25 yards out, past a helpless goalie.
With his tenth goal of the season, No. 11 joined Harry Chambers and John Aldridge as the only players in Premier League history to score in each of Liverpool’s opening five home league matches of a season.
Gakpo’s near-post drive narrowly missed the goal, and Anthony Elanga’s volley hit the underside of Alisson Becker’s crossbar as time ran down, but Liverpool had already secured the victory.
