Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed why he choose to wear No. 8 for Liverpool upon signing with the club: it was in part because of the Steven Gerrard tattoo he already had.
On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool finalized the £60 million transfer of Szoboszlai, making him the club’s second summer signing.
His signing comes after that of Alexis Mac Allister, who arrived in June from Brighton and wore No. 10 during Sadio Mane’s time with the club.
The new player will wear the No. 8 jersey that was formerly worn by Naby Keita but is more commonly associated with the legendary Steven Gerrard.
Many of Liverpool’s recent signings look up to Gerrard as a role model because of his heroics while captaining the team, especially in Istanbul.
And Szoboszlai is so inspired by the renowned midfielder that he tattooed a quote of his own onto his arm: “Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.”
The 22-year-old shared his thoughts on wearing the No. 8 jersey with LFCTV upon his move to Anfield.
To which I replied, “Not [for] a special reason, but of course it’s a great number,” he said.
This number has been worn by several outstanding athletes.
“And also I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard,” I continued. “What he said… I don’t even remember when but before… so that was also a reason why.”
Previous to Gerrard, Emile Heskey wore the No. 8 jersey, as did Oyvind Leonhardsen, Stan Collymore, Jamie Redknapp, and Paul Stewart during the Premier League period.
Szoboszlai was apparently motivated to create this because of the 43-year-old who made it famous in the present day.
