Paul Scholes, a former player for Manchester United, told Erik ten Hag that Christian Eriksen is a “much better footballer” than Sofyan Amrabat.
AHEAD OF TIME?
In the second half of United’s narrow 1-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Tuesday, Eriksen was included in the mix. With Eriksen in the lineup, the Red Devils were able to exert more creative pressure in the offensive third where they were having difficulty.
After Amrabat was substituted, Scott McTominay dipped deeper to give more strength, allowing the former Tottenham midfield player to operate freely in forward parts of the pitch. Now, Scholes has recommended that Ten Hag start Eriksen rather than Amrabat, who hasn’t been able to impress since joining on loan from Fiorentina in the summer.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“The first half gave us the impression that we were watching a Europa League match. as on a Thursday evening. Scholes, a former United midfielder, stated on TNT Sports, “Poor.”
“The second half was far better, but you start the better players. You start Christian Eriksen, who is a far superior football player. With all due respect, Amrabat is a stopper who will do what he wants. But he refuses to develop play.
Eriksen Christian will. As you watched the runs being scored, [Bruno] Fernandes and [Alejandro] Garnacho entered the game. Eriksen will track down these athletes. They appeared like a legitimate team once more for a fifteen to twenty-minute period.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Out of 11 appearances in all competitions this season, Eriksen has only made four starts and has been deployed largely as a substitute. But Scholes thinks his cutting passing will give United an advantage over defensively oriented teams.
