Barcelona beat Athletic Club 1-0 on Sunday night at the Olympic Stadium. It was far from a vintage effort, but the win moved Barcelona within a point of Real Madrid and Girona at the top of the L Liga standings.
Marc Guiu scored the game’s only goal. After being passed in by Joao Felix, the 17-year-old scored his first professional goal just seconds after entering the game.
Xavi Hernandez, speaking after the game (via Marca), reminisced on the game and expressed his joy at Guiu’s winning goal and cameo appearance.
It was a tough battle, but we won. We anticipated Athletic to be a formidable foe. They’re a courageous bunch. The key to our success is Marc, a child from La Masia. I’m glad for him, because the three points are crucial.
I like him on a human level, he has ambition and drive, and the notion of him has crossed my mind. I have no qualms with consulting scholarly sources. When I was 17 or 18, Barcelona gave me a lot of confidence, and I want to pass it forward.
Barcelona will next face Clasico rivals Real Madrid next weekend after their Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.
