A “soleus muscle injury in his right leg” has sidelined veteran midfielder Sergi Roberto, according to Barcelona.
This season, the 31-year-old has made six appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring his first goal of the season in the 2-2 draw with Granada before the international break.
Roberto came on in the 61st minute and played the rest of the game, however he recently sustained a muscle injury in practice.
Barcelona have not issued an estimate for the Spaniard’s return, but journalist Toni Juanmarti has speculated that he will miss two to three weeks of action.
Therefore, Roberto won’t play in the forthcoming matches against Athletic Bilbao, Shakhtar Donetsk, or Real Madrid, but he might return on November 4 to face Real Sociedad.
“First-team player Sergi Roberto has a soleus muscle injury in his right leg and will be unable to play until the problem is resolved,” said the statement released by the Catalan side.
Roberto’s future at Camp Nou is unclear, with the player rumored to be considering a move to the MLS when his current deal expires in June of 2019.
On the bright side, Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde are thought to have trained with Barcelona on Wednesday, giving the team a double injury boost.
Due to injuries sustained against Granada and Scotland, respectively, Yamal and Balde were forced to withdraw from the Spain squad.
Juanmarti claims both players practiced on Wednesday, adding credence to the idea that they will be eligible for this weekend’s match against Athletic.
While the other players have been made available for selection, Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri have not.
Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Pedri are all expected to make their way back for Barcelona’s El Clasico at the end of the month.
Xavi’s squad is still undefeated across all competitions, although they sit three points behind Real Madrid in third place in La Liga after nine games.
