After confirming that he got cramp late in Uruguay’s match, Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez may be without him on Saturday against Everton.
On Wednesday, Nunez led a spectacular performance for Uruguay as they defeated Brazil for the first time in 22 years, 2-0.
However, the Liverpool forward left with doubts over his participation in the Merseyside derby, in part because of cramping.
He told El Observador, “I come to leave everything on the pitch, and today it showed.” In the end, I felt a little squished.
The early kickoff at Anfield, the long travel back from Uruguay, and the lack of recovery and training time all point to him not starting.
After the previous international break, Jurgen Klopp decided to bench Nunez and Luis Diaz for identical reasons, and his decision to start Alexis Mac Allister against Wolves was heavily panned.
This is made more challenging versus Everton by the absences of key players like Cody Gakpo, Ben Doak, Curtis Jones, and Thiago due to injury or suspension.
Although Nunez is not expected to be left off the roster, he is more likely to start on the bench behind Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota.
Mac Allister’s rest is made more practicable by the presence of Ryan Gravenberch, who was not called up by the Netherlands for so-called disciplinary reasons.
Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, or Harvey Elliott might fill the other two available midfield positions alongside Dominik Szoboszlai.
Last month, while playing for Uruguay, Nunez picked up a slight injury that prompted manager Marcelo Bielsa to substitute him out owing to “muscular difficulties.”
Three days later, in a 3-1 victory over Wolves, the 24-year-old substituted for the final 34 minutes.
