Neymar leaves Brazil match with apparent left knee injury
Tuesday’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss for Brazil to Uruguay ended with Neymar walking off the pitch in tears, apparently suffering a knee injury.
The 31-year-old striker was quickly surrounded by players from both teams as he gripped his left knee after tripping and falling during a run at the Centenario Stadium in the 44th minute.
Teammate Richarlison replaced Neymar, who was carried off on a stretcher while holding both of his hands to his face.
Neymar’s health was not immediately known by Brazil’s medical staff, but sources told Reuters that he had suffered a significant left knee sprain and would go through testing to see whether there was any ligament damage.
Brazil dropped points for the second straight game as Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez scored the first goal and Marcelo Bielsa’s team’s Nicolás de la Cruz scored the second.
Before the World Cup qualifier, supporters of Neymar, who plays for Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, chastised him for his poor performance in Thursday’s 1-1 draw between Venezuela and host Brazil.
After making his debut for Brazil’s national team in 2010, Neymar has scored 79 goals in 128 games, although in recent years, he has suffered from injuries for both his club and the national team. He has missed several months of the last two seasons due to various ankle problems, and he was sidelined for two World Cup matches in Qatar following his injury during Brazil’s opening match against Serbia.
