When guard Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns faced the late Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2016, Bryant autographed a pair of sneakers for Booker, asking him to “Be Legendary.”
Booker now has a lifelong reminder.
Booker has a very special meaning attached to his first tattoo. A duplicate of the message that Bryant gave the Suns star is on his arm.
On Monday, Booker posted images of it to Instagram.Even though Booker was still a rookie during Bryant’s final season, it was obvious that he had the potential to become a top scorer when the Suns and Lakers faced each other on March 23 for Bryant’s farewell game versus Phoenix.
Booker led Phoenix to a victory over the Lakers that evening, scoring 28 points on 12-of-22 shooting and dishing out seven assists.
The 19- and 37-year-olds spoke after the game. There are still pictures of Bryant icing down and grinning at Booker.
Bryant passed away on January 26 in a Calabasas, California, helicopter crash. Nine people died in the crash, including Gianna, his 13-year-old daughter.
Since his death, the basketball community has been in mourning. A variety of league-wide tributes have been held in his honor, such as renaming the All-Star MVP trophy the NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award.
Booker will always carry a small part of Bryant with him as he works to uphold the legend’s legacy.
