According to a source, Neymar has threatened not to travel with the rest of Brazil’s national team to Uruguay for their upcoming international encounter.
The attacker and his teammates are scheduled to play Uruguay in a World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday morning, but they may be without a vital player due to a disagreement with the federation.
After Brazil’s shocking stalemate with Venezuela in World Cup qualification last week, a fan threw a bag of popcorn at him, hitting him in the head.
Fans expressed their displeasure with the 1-1 draw, as it meant that Neymar’s team had dropped below world champions Argentina in the South American qualifying table.
Apparently the Al Hilal striker has told Brazil’s Football Federation president Ednaldo Rodrigues to stop allowing games to be played in Cuiaba, as reported by Brazilian writer Jose Carlos Araujo.
As the game, Neymar reportedly confronted Rodrigues verbally in the tunnel as the two ran into one other for the first time since the popcorn incident.
At that point, he allegedly vowed not to travel for Wednesday’s game, though whether or not he will actually follow through on that threat is unknown.
After failing to win a game they should have easily won, Brazil is currently in a tight group struggle as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
Brazil had beaten Bolivia and Peru, with the latter match coming down to a last-minute goal, while Venezuela had a victory and a loss from their first two games.
In addition to a controversy off the field concerning Neymar’s future, they have to deal with upcoming matchups against Uruguay, Colombia, and Argentina.
Before the popcorn incident, Neymar got into a fight with former Newcastle and West Brom player Solomon Rondon, demonstrating his disappointment with the outcome.
His teammates were trying to get him back into the locker room when he lost it after receiving a toss from the stands. He then left the dugout and yelled at an audience member before returning with a fresh barrage of insults and an accusatory finger.
He was eventually hauled away by the front of his shirt as tensions began to rise. Since the game, he has been spotted in training.
Brazil’s 15-match home winning streak in World Cup qualifying ended with a draw against Venezuela. The streak began in 2015.
