According to a source, the Warriors and Klay Thompson have entered the final year of his contract, but there has been ‘no progress’ towards a new deal.
Thompson, at 33, has spent his entire 12-year career with the franchise and has been instrumental in each of Golden State’s four championships since 2015.
However, Thompson’s status after the 2023–24 NBA season is uncertain at this time.
The two sides remain far apart on years and money, and ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski predicted on NBA Countdown that Klay Thompson may enter free agency next summer without a contract.
According to Spotrac, Thompson’s 2019 salary will be $43.2 million, the first year of a five-year, $189.9 million contract he inked with the organization.
The five-time All-Star was sidelined from June 2019 to January 2022 with ailments to his Achilles and knees.
Last year, he scored 21.9 points per game in 69 games and led the league in three-pointers made.
It is unclear, though, how much of an investment the Warriors will make in him, given his advanced age and history of injuries.
This summer, the team extended the contract of defensive veteran Draymond Green for four years and $100 million.
Green and Thompson are of the same age group.
The Lakers eliminated the Warriors from playoff contention last season.
On October 24th, they kick off the season against the Suns.
