The Netherlands squeaked out a 1-0 victory in Greece thanks to a penalty kick from Virgil van Dijk in stoppage time, keeping their hopes of advancing to Euro 2024 from the Republic of Ireland’s qualifying group alive.
After losing to Group B leaders France in Amsterdam last week, who also qualified for the finals, the Dutch needed a win to guarantee second place in the group and a ticket in the tournament.
Greece appeared to have done enough after Wout Weghorst’s first-half penalty was saved to maintain their second-place standing in the league.
However, following a lengthy VAR review of a foul on Denzel Dumfries deep into overtime, the Dutch captain Van Dijk converted the penalty. Manager of Greece, Guy Poyet, received a red card for his objections late in the game.
The Dutch are now in second place and have a game in hand on Greece, who will be playing France at home to end their group stage campaign in November.
On November 18th, Ireland will travel to Amsterdam to take on the Dutch in their last group encounter. The Dutch will also play Gibraltar in November.
With a 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan on the road in Group F, Austria qualified for Euro 2024 thanks to a penalty kick from Marcel Sabitzer in the second half. Late in the match, Guido Burgstaller was sent off for Austria.
