Jarred Vanderbilt seemed to have the inside track on the team’s fifth starting spot at the outset of the Lakers training camp, but he might end up on the bench. The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly “monitoring soreness” in Vanderbilt’s left heel, which has prevented him from playing in the team’s previous two games following his participation in the preseason opener, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. He will not only miss the team’s Friday night matchup with the Golden State Warriors, but he will also miss the matchup with the Warriors.

According to McMenamin, his sources still believe Vanderbilt will be ready for the regular season even though:

It’s difficult not to worry at least a little that Vanderbilt may fall behind as they attempt to assist everyone adjust to new roles and responsibilities, even if he is ready and the enigmatic fifth starting Darvin Ham claimed he has already decided on. It’s difficult to avoid feeling at least a little worried that this would hinder the team’s efforts to assist everyone in adjusting to their new roles and responsibilities.

The good news is that all four of the known Lakers starters were on Vanderbilt’s team during roughly half of the season and their run to the Western Conference Finals. Because of this, he won’t suffer the same setbacks as a rookie player in the event that they miss a significant amount of practice and the preseason.

Despite this, if he is going to be a substitute player, the team and he might gain by adding a couple exhibition games and sessions to help him get used to playing with freshmen like Christian Wood, Gabe Vincent, and Jaxson Hayes.

However, there is absolutely no reason to be very concerned about this. Whether Vanderbilt needs a few regular season games to get used to his new teammates doesn’t matter; the circumstances are what they are. We saw personally how quickly the 6’9 wing stopper could pick up the pace and begin contributing to the team’s success when he joined the Lakers the previous season. All that remains for Lakers supporters to do is cross their fingers that Vando’s persistent heel problem won’t become a problem for the team and that he can contribute significantly once the games start to matter.
