Haute Living Editor-in-Chief Laura Schreffler sat down with Celtics star Jayson Tatum to discuss his love of rare and gorgeous timepieces for Haute Time.
It would definitely be a Rolex because it will always be a learning experience. It was the watch that really introduced me to rare pieces. I love walking into certain rooms and people stop me and say, “What a nice room you have there.” And normal people, they just think that all watches are the same. I received a matte Audemars Piguet in 2020.
What’s special about it is this matte AP bezel. I see only a handful of people have frozen AP. But the difference is that the face resembles a skeleton and that is what makes it so rare. A lot of people buy stone watches that aren’t worth much. But this one, they literally took the diamond and smashed it.
The frost that appears when you touch the diamond will cover it in white. It is not covered with diamonds. It was freezing – literally like snowflakes. This is the first one I bought which is super rare. I will only wear it to special events where I know there will be people who will appreciate this watch. And you know, they always ask me, “How did you get this? When did you get this?” And that’s a good feeling.
First, I always tell people to buy things of value. Buy what you like. If it has value, it doesn’t have to be the greatest thing. But if you like it, if you’re going to wear it, you should get it. And what I learned is that you don’t have to follow what everyone else is doing. If you like it, get it.
I wear my watch. I don’t buy them just to put them in a box. If you don’t want to get what other people are getting or can’t get, then you have to build those relationships with different brands, and networks and get to know people. I have a good relationship with a few guys who really care about me. And you know, when those special or rare people come, they always reach out and I’m very grateful for that. Like having something that other people [don’t have] is a nice feeling.
