Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz may have shared a fatal connection at Anfield, but on this night they faced off against each other in a World Cup qualifying match between Uruguay and Colombia.
James Rodriguez, formerly of Everton, volleyed in the game-winning goal for Colombia shortly after the half-hour mark. But immediately after halftime, Mathias Olivera was all set to come in from a corner and tie the score.
Shortly after, Mateus Uribe put the home team ahead again, but a late red card to Camilo Vargas handed the visitors the victory.
Vargas gave Uruguay a draw when, in stoppage time, he committed a foul inside the penalty area and gave up a penalty kick, which Nunez converted from 12 yards out.
After a heated match for their respective countries, Liverpool’s South American pair embraced and spoke briefly on the field after the final whistle.
On Wednesday, Nunez’s Uruguayan team will face Brazil, although he will likely not face his team’s goalkeeper.
Manager Tite started Ederson in goal and Alisson on the bench for Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Venezuela in World Cup qualification play.

Diaz and Colombia face Ecuador on Wednesday before returning to Anfield to play Everton again on October 21.
In other news, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah scored the game-winning goal in a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Zambia in their most recent international friendly.
The 31-year-old got some much-needed rest at the end of the friendly thanks to Egypt, who took him off in the 12th minute of injury time.
