Lakers 125-129 Warriors: LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves return to the lineup

The Los Angeles Lakers are out to win their third straight game when they host the Golden State Warriors. They want to keep winning in the preseason. This is the Lakers’ first real home game of the preseason, and LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Austin Reaves are all likely to play even though they didn’t play on Wednesday.

But none of those three players has been the most interesting thing about the Lakers’ preseason so far. That honor goes to D’Angelo Russell. This preseason, the point guard has been on fire, making 63.3% of his shots from the field and 61.4% from 3-point range. He has also given 19 assists and only turned the ball over four times. Russell is likely to have a big season, and a lot of people will be watching to see if he can keep up his great play.

The same goes for Davis. In both games he has played, he has looked sure of himself and active on both ends of the court. His shot from the outside will also be closely watched, especially since head coach Darvin Ham recently challenged him.

In the one exhibition game they played, both LeBron and Reaves did well, and more of the same would be a good thing. Also, this is true for all of the Lakers’ 3-point shots.

There are a lot more 3-pointers being made by the Lakers this season than there were last year. At least 40% of their shots are made from deep by Russell, Reaves, Davis, Rui Hachimura, and Gabe Vincent. Taurean Prince is also very close to that number. The Lakers can do a lot of their scoring in the paint, whereas LeBron, Davis, and Reaves all do well because they can shoot well from long range.

On the other hand, L.A. isn’t fully healthy because Jarred Vanderbilt (heel) and Cam Reddish (ankle) are still out with injuries. Vincent is also not playing in his first game because of a sore back, but this is just a safeguard.

The Lakers and Warriors have met twice in practice so far, with Golden State not having played since the first game. The Warriors are still without Draymond Green because he hurt his ankle. This makes it hard for them to add Chris Paul to their system and get along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

There is some rivalry between these two teams, which is likely helped by James’ past against Golden State and last year’s tense playoff series. Because of this, this game might be a little more intense than usual for a preseason game.
