(Reuters) Oct. 12 Uruguay salvaged a hard-fought 2-2 draw away to 10-man Colombia in World Cup qualifying on Thursday thanks to a penalty from Darwin Nunez.
In the 35th minute, Uruguay fell down after James Rodrigez scored off a cross from Rafael Santos Borre. But just after halftime, they tied it up on a header by Mathias Olivera from a corner kick.
Mateus Uribe scored for Colombia again five minutes later, this time off another cross by Borre. Camilo Vargas, their goalkeeper, was sent off in the 87th minute for picking up two yellow cards; he had fouled Maximiliano Araujo, leading to a penalty, which the opposition converted.
Substitute goalkeeper Alvaro Montero, who came on for Vargas when winger Jhon Arias was injured, was unable to stop Nunez’s penalty kick.
Colombia and Uruguay are still ranked third and fourth, respectively, in CONMEBOL’s 2026 World Cup qualifying standings. Later on Thursday, Brazil takes on Venezuela, Chile plays Peru, Argentina hosts Paraguay, and Bolivia takes on Ecuador.
