The Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114–106 on Sunday in the first game of the preseason for both teams. Payton Pritchard scored 26 points after getting a new four-year, $30 million deal.
Pritchard had 23 minutes of play for the Celtics and made 9 of 14 shots, including 6 of 11 3-pointers. He also had four assists.
The news of Pritchard’s contract came from ESPN. The Celtics guard said after the game that he had signed the deal.
Pritchard said, “When I signed it, it was almost like a relief, a feeling of being safe.” “That’s kind of how I felt about it. I needed to keep something safe.
At 7/10, Jaylen Brown scored 19 points for Boston. Kristaps Porzingis scored 17, and Jayson Tatum had 13 points and 10 boards.
The 76ers were led by Tyrese Maxey, who scored 24 points and had four assists. Tobias Harris scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Jaden Springer scored 14 points, and Patrick Beverley scored 12.
There was no NBA MVP winner in Philadelphia, and James Harden, who has been looking for a move, also didn’t play.
The Bucks won 105–102.
Marjon Beauchamp led host Milwaukee to victory with 18 points and 8 rebounds in the first game of the preseason.
Thanasis Antetokounmpo scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, and blocked two shots in 21 minutes for the Bucks while his younger brother Giannis Antetokounmpo didn’t play.
Before the break, Malik Beasley scored 13 points and Brook Lopez scored 11 points for the Bucks.
At the end of 23 minutes, Coby White played the most minutes on the team and had 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. The Bulls played all 20 of their players and Patrick Williams scored 13 points. Guard Lonzo Ball was the only one who didn’t play. He will miss the season because of knee problems.
SPRINGS 126, SUNS 130, OT
Phoenix threw away a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter and still won in OT, but Monty Williams’ new team lost to his old team.
The fifth overall pick in this year’s draft, Ausar Thompson, made a 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in regulation. The Pistons beat the Suns 38–18 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 122 and send it to overtime.
Phoenix got out to a 46-29 lead in the first quarter thanks to Kevin Durant’s 10 points.
Grayson Allen led the Suns with 18 points and three 3-pointers. Devin Booker scored 12 points in 15 minutes, and Chimezie Metu scored 14. Yota Watanabe scored 10 points, and Bradley Beal and Saben Lee each scored 11.
25 points were scored by Marvin Bagley III, who led Detroit. He scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and gave out 6 assists. Cade Cunningham scored 12 points and had six assists, and Jaden Ivey scored 15.
The Suns fired Williams at the end of last season. He agreed to play for the Pistons for six years.
EATERS 127, PACERS 122, OT
Jake LaRavia scored the last five points in OT to help Memphis beat Indiana, who came to town.
LaRavia made a jump shot with 1:13 left in the extra period to give the Grizzlies a 124-122 lead. He scored 15 points. As time ran out, he made a three-point play to seal the win. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 18 points and stopped five shots to lead the team. Desmond Bane scored 17 points and set up 4 others. Derrick Rose scored 13 points in 14 minutes by making 6 of 8 shots.
With 19 points, Jarace Walker led Indiana. He was the eighth pick in this year’s draft and was traded to the Wizards. At the start of the extra time, he made a four-point play. Mathurin scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half, which gave the Pacers a 59-56 lead at the break. Before the break, T.J. McConnell scored all 11 of his points. Ben Sheppard got 15 in the first round.
Ravens 112; Kings 99
To win over Sacramento in Vancouver, British Columbia, Gary Trent Jr. scored 22 points.
Trent made seven out of twelve shots for the Raptors, including three three-pointers. In 18 minutes, Scottie Barnes scored 15 points, grabbed seven boards, and passed the ball four times. It was O.G. Anunoby who scored 14 points, Chris Boucher, who scored 11, and Jalen McDaniels who scored 10. The 13th pick in this year’s draft, Gradey Dick, scored five points, grabbed three boards, and stole two balls in 14 minutes.
The Kings were led by Sasha Vezenkov, who scored 12 points in 11 minutes. 11 points were made by both Keegan Murray and Harrison Barnes. Jalen Smith’s layup with three seconds left tied the game at 114 and sent it to extra time. Smith scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked two shots.
CLIPPERS 96 and JAZZ 101
Kris Dunn scored 15 points to help Utah beat Los Angeles in Honolulu. He made all seven of his shots, including a 3-pointer.
The Jazz beat the Clippers 26–16 in the third quarter to come back from being down seven points at halftime and take a 69–66 lead. Talen Horton-Tucker had 13 points and six rebounds for the Jazz.
Lauri Markkanen chipped in with 10 points and 8 boards. With the 16th pick in this year’s draft, Keyonte George scored 10 points and set up 5 others. However, he only made 2 of 9 shots, including 1 of 6 from beyond the line.
They were led by Bones Hyland, who scored 18 points. He made seven of eight shots from inside the arc, but none of his six three-point shots went in. Kawhi Leonard scored 11 points in 15 minutes and was the only other Clipper to score in double figures.
