After the Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 victory against Liverpool’s Reds, a VAR issue arose, and James Maddison poked fun at his England colleague Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Spurs beat Jurgen Klopp’s team 2-1 on September 30. Luis Diaz had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half.
A few minutes after the final whistle, the PGMOL [Professional Game Match Officials Limited] confirmed that a’significant human error’ had been made in ruling out the goal.
The refereeing organization then released audio of the judgment being made, revealing the turmoil that ensued in the VAR room and the terror that ensued as it became clear that a massive mistake had been made.
Klopp demanded a rematch of the Premier League game in the days that followed. I wasn’t just waiting around. I just want to make sure that we handle football the right way, since it means a lot to us.
As a football fan, I believe a replay is the only fair solution. This is quite unlikely to occur.
While that specific tempest has began to calm down, Spurs player Maddison couldn’t resist a jab at Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold as the two of them arrived at St. George’s Park with the rest of the England team in preparation for games against Australia and Italy.
Maddison posted an Instagram photo of Alexander-Arnold pointing at him and said, “Still asking for a replay!”
With Klopp already incensed by red cards handed to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota, Liverpool ultimately lost the game in north London on a last-minute own goal from Joel Matip.
Even while he understood that Darren England and Dan Cook had made an honest mistake, the Reds manager believed that other options should have been explored before the game, such as Spurs letting his team score a goal unopposed to make up for the blunder.
To open the gate would be so unprecedented, it is said. As a 56-year-old man, I have made my fair share of poor choices and can easily shrug them off. Klopp insisted that nothing of the like had ever occurred.
If that happened again, a rematch would be in order, or the referee might have spoken to both teams’ bench to apologize for the error and agreed to let Liverpool score a goal so that they could regroup.
