Fans have alleged, under IFAB guidelines, that Pascal Gross of Brighton should have been sent off for taking down Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai and conceding a penalty.
With the score knotted at one apiece, referee Anthony Taylor blew his whistle after the German dragged down Szoboszlai within the penalty box.
Jurgen Klopp’s squad took the lead as Mohamed Salah converted a penalty kick by beating Bart Verbruggen to the bottom corner.
However, Gross was not shown any disciplinary punishment for the event. To the joy of Reds fans, VAR confirmed it to be a goal.
Although Liverpool’s number eight was denied a clear shot on goal by Gross, several questioned the referee’s judgment.
Jack Lusby, author of And This Is Anfield, shared a screenshot of the new IFAB regulations on X (Twitter).
Any violation of the law that involves “an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball” warrants a warning for the offending player.
If the situation calls for it, the player should be shown a red card for preventing a goal.
Referees are not required to display a red card to a player who has just conceded a penalty if that player has made a legitimate and genuine tackle for the ball, thanks to a double jeopardy regulation.
Furthermore, supporters of Liverpool claim that Gross should have been sent off for pulling down Szoboszlai without making any attempt to play the ball.
