Fans feel that Brighton’s Pascal Gross should have been sent off for knocking down Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai and giving away a penalty under IFAB rules

With the score at 1-1, the German brought down Szoboszlai in the area, and referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot.

Jurgen Klopp’s team took the lead thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty kick into the bottom corner beyond Bart Verbruggen.

Gross, though, did not receive a warning or a red card for the incident. VAR checked and validated it, much to the pleasure of Reds fans.

Some questioned the referee’s decision, claiming that Gross effectively denied Liverpool’s number eight a chance to score.

X (Twitter) received a screenshot of the revised IFAB laws from This Is Anfield writer Jack Lusby.

The legislation stipulates that a player should be cautioned if they commit an offense involving ‘an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball’.

In all other cases, the player should be sent off for denying a scoring opportunity.

A double jeopardy law exists, which states that referees are not required to display a player a red card after awarding a penalty if they make a clean and real challenge for the ball.

And Liverpool supporters argue that Gross made no attempt to play the ball when he brought down Szoboszlai, and that he should have been sent off as a result.

“Denial of goalscoring opportunity with no effort to get the ball,” one user said on X (Twitter). “Clear the red card.”

Someone else said: “I get the double jeopardy rule but the player didn’t play any attempt to win the ball.”

“How has Gross not been sent off for that?” said a third. Szoboszlai’s scoring was clearly halted.”

According to the Liverpool Echo, VAR officials did not consider Szoboszlai’s chance as a ‘clear goalscoring opportunity,’ though the refereeing organization, PGMOL, has yet to make an official comment.

In any case, the discussion will undoubtedly continue.
