Both teams had an entertaining match that might have gone any way.
Simon Adingra stole the ball from former Brighton player Alexis Mac Allister and surprised Alisson with a finish to give Albion the lead.
Visitors looked open at the back, but hosts couldn’t add to their advantage and Liverpool immediately got back in.
Mo Salah quietly scored an equalizer five minutes before halftime after a great play by Luis Diaz, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Darwin Nunez.
Jurgen Klopp’s team improved when Pascal Gross fouled Szoboszlai and was awarded a penalty. Salah beat penalty misses behind him to make it 2-1.
At halftime, Ryan Gravenberch replaced the ineffectual Harvey Elliot and nearly scored, hitting the crossbar at the backpost.
Brighton lost the game but remained dangerous. Adingra was excellently stopped by Alisson one-on-one.
Liverpool kept the hosts quiet but were caught off guard by a Solly March free-kick, which Lewis Dunk scored to equalize again.
Brighton should have won when Joao Pedro sent the ball over from close range after choosing a place.
Only a point was earned when neither team could win.
How we assessed Liverpool players:
Alisson – 6: Unprepared for Brighton’s goal. His stunning save kept Adingra out. Unable to stop Dunk’s goal. Got off his line to stop a threat.
Kaoru Mitoma was mainly silent under Trent Alexander-Arnold [7]. Two great interceptions, notably one in the second half with an extended leg to stop Mitoma. Replacing following Brighton’s second goal.
Joel Matip – 7: Had a good game after his own goal last weekend. Konate replaced him at 2-1.
Virgil van Dijk – 6: Bad pass to Mac Allister before Brighton opening. Despite strong fan protests and the manager being booked, seemed to handle Mitoma’s wayward shot but nothing was given. Most defensively solid.
Andy Robertson – 6: Adingra was an entertaining opponent. Dangerous attacking runs. He let March’s free kick pass for 2-2.
Dominik Szoboszlai—7 became advanced. Was quiet in the first half but helped set up Salah’s goal. Foul by Gross for penalty. Great cross from Gravenberch should have been turned in at back post. Scheduled March major challenge.
Alexis Mac Allister – 5: Started against his 98 Premier League team. Mostly responsible for opening goal when Adingra tackled him. Playing deeper than for Brighton, he struggled before Gravenberch relieved him. Lucky to avoid booking after cynical fouls. Nice offensive passing.
Harvey Elliott (5): Season-opening PL start. Good decision to let Salah equalize. His defense was minimal. Halftime substitute: Ryan Gravenberch
Mo Salah—8: Both goals expertly taken. Class is forever and will be relieved to score after several terrible misses. Got solid attacking positions.
Darwin Nunez – 6: Never looked like scoring but played brilliantly. Nice Salah assist. Let Dunk sprint past him for 2-2.
Luis Diaz – 6: Not his day. Working hard in attack and defense, but had several misses. Should have taken second-half chance.
At halftime, Ryan Gravenberch was substituted to give midfield protection. Nearly scored but hit crossbar. Tame shot can be salvaged. Good effect.
Ibrahima Konate – 5: Statuesque for Brighton’s equaliser – didn’t shine after replacing Matip. Pedro was unmarked and should have scored.
After Brighton’s second goal, Joe Gomez(6) came on. Saved Liverpool a point. Booked for Mitoma cynicism.
