After departing Manchester United in the summer, David de Gea is still without a club, and Andre Onana, his replacement, has not had an easy time adjusting to life at Old Trafford.
David de Gea was once again conspicuously absent from the drama at Manchester United during the thrilling victory over Brentford.
Due to his contract being allowed to expire, the former Old Trafford No. 1 controversially quit the team in the summer. Despite having the highest profile of any player at the height of his career, he still doesn’t have a club and has expressed little interest in staying in touch with his old team.
Andre Onana, who joined from Inter Milan, has made a number of mistakes since taking over for De Gea, leading some to doubt the decision to fire the Spaniard.
Again, Onana was the center of attention, even if Scott McTominay scored twice in stoppage time to keep him blushing less. Mathias Jensen beat the Cameroon international in the first half with a shot that went under his arm and beat Onana centrally.
As all of that was going on, De Gea posted a video of himself playing Call of Duty on Saturday afternoon, captioning it with the phrase “perfect timing” and two middle-finger gestures.
Erik ten Hag had to defend his new goalkeeper because of the former Inter player’s costly mistakes against teams like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Galatasaray.
Ten Hag had previously alluded to De Gea’s shortcomings as a playmaker, therefore the decision to seek Onana was perceived as a tactical change. “He’s a great goalie and has a different profile,” he stated. We wanted to sign him for that reason. Something in our game will alter with him.”
De Gea expressed his desire to take on a new challenge when his departure was revealed. “I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt,” he posted on social media. It was an honor given to a select few fortunate football players to captain the squad and represent this institution, the largest club in the world. It’s time for me to take on a fresh challenge and push myself in unfamiliar situations once more.”
De Gea won the Golden Glove, but he had a difficult last season. His high-profile errors against Brentford and other teams early in the season cost United in Europe, as Sevilla sent them packing.
