Barcelona announced on Thursday that striker Robert Lewandowski sustained an ankle injury in the club’s Champions League match against Porto and would be sidelined indefinitely. This means that Poland’s captain will be sidelined for their forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Faroe Islands and Moldova.
Lewandowski, a 35-year-old Polish international, was taken down hard by David Carmo of Porto in the first half of Wednesday’s 1-0 triumph for Barca.
The injury is devastating for the Spanish champions, who are now second in LaLiga, one point behind leaders Real Madrid. This month’s ‘Clasico’ will see Barça take on Real at home.
“Tests conducted this Thursday morning have revealed that Robert Lewandowski has sprained his left ankle and will be out of action until the injury heals,” Barca announced.
With five goals and three assists, Lewandowski is the team’s leading scorer in the league this year. Barcelona’s next game is this Sunday, away against Granada.
Lewandowski, Poland’s captain and leading scorer, will be unavailable for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifying matches against the Faroe Islands on October 12 and Moldova on October 15.
