Huge guy Tristan Thompson is finishing a new deal to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team that picked him. He signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on the last day of the 2023 regular season as a backup in case they needed him in the playoffs. Thompson’s representative, Rich Paul, called Shams Charania of The Athletic to tell him about his client’s new deal as a 6’9″ power forward/center. Through the fourth round of the 2011 draft, Cleveland picked Tristan Thompson from The University of Texas at Austin.

In the exciting 2011 draft, they also got Kyrie Irving from Duke, who would go on to be an All-NBA point guard. The team would win a title with the help of LeBron James, who is now an All-Star for the Los Angeles Lakers, Kevin Love, who is now a key player for the Miami Heat, J.R. Smith, and others.

The Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals four years in a row (2015–18) and won in 2016 with Thompson either starting or making a big difference off the bench. The Hidden Hills native, who is 32 years old, signed with Los Angeles as a backup center during the team’s big run to the Western Conference Finals. Darvin Ham only used Tristan Thompson as a backup center in Game 4 of their 113-111 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Thompson scored 4 points, grabbed 1 board, and played well defense in the paint during his 9:41 of playing time. He shot 2 for 4 from the field. Thompson, a friend of James from when they played together on the Cavaliers, signed with the Lakers after being out of work for the 2022–2023 season. When he joined the Lakers, he gave advice from his years of experience to a group of young players who had not yet made it to the playoffs.

Even though Cleveland has a strong team, he won’t be able to match his career marks of nine points on 51.9% shooting and 8.4 boards per game in 730 regular season games. It’s still great to see him back with his old NBA team, though. That’s especially true since he wasn’t going to play a big part in the new Los Angeles frontcourt for the 2023–24 season.
