There are only a few days left until the Dallas Mavericks’ first preseason game, and fans can’t wait to see how the new-look roster performs against the Minnesota Timberwolves in two simultaneous games in Abu Dhabi.
Fans are excited to see Dereck Lively II and Luka Doncic connect, and Mavericks rookie forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper has expressed interest in guarding Anthony Edwards.
While the potential pairing of Doncic and Lively II has garnered the most attention, there is another new Maverick who could be a future star next to Luka.
The Mavericks signed him to a training camp contract in August. His name is Greg Brown III. Brown III is about to begin his third season in the NBA, and he may have found his ideal fit in Dallas. He spent his first two seasons in Portland, but after growing up in Texas and attending the University of Texas, he is clearly excited to be back in his home state and playing basketball.
Brown III has career averages of 4.0 ppg and 2.4 rpg in his first two campaigns. Brown III, who saw limited action and spent most of the year in the G League, may find his stride with Dallas.
During an exclusive conversation with The Smoking Cuban, Brown III discussed his influence on the Mavs and how he complements Doncic.
He claimed to be able to help out defensively if Doncic gets beat or as a kick-out option for him on the perimeter. Brown III also mentioned his willingness to use his athleticism in any situation, including as a terrific lob threat for Doncic. You can watch the entire interview here.
In his rookie year with the Mavericks, Brown III may not see significant playing time and may not even make the team’s final roster.
Right now, he’s competing for Dallas’ final two-way roster place; if he doesn’t make it, he’ll spend the season playing for the Texas Legends of the G League.
It will be interesting to see how Brown III does in his bid for the tenth and last two-way roster position, as he was named by Mavs head coach Jason Kidd as one of the Exhibit 10 players who have stood out to him throughout training camp.
Although Brown III is still a work in progress, his defensive focus and lob-catching skills give fans reason to be optimistic about his future roster prospects, and he may eventually prove to be the ideal complement to Luka. Due to his stature, he is capable of playing any forward position and can defend a variety of positions.
Stay tuned for updates on Greg Brown III, Luka Doncic, and the rest of the Dallas Mavericks as the season progresses.
