Liverpool appeal against Curtis Jones’ red card rejected: 3-match suspension

๏ปฟA red card given to Curtis Jones in Saturday’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur has been upheld, despite Liverpool’s appeal.

Having caught Yves Bissouma with his studs in a crushing challenge, the Englishman was sent off in the first minutes of that Premier League match.

Jones got his foot on the ball, but the 22-year-old’s foot slid into Bissouma’s upper ankle in a 50-50 foot battle.

Referee Simon Hooper first merely booked Jones for the tackle, but after consulting the pitchside monitor, he increased the penalty to a red card.

Liverpool chose earlier this week to appeal the decision to immediately send off Jones, meaning he would miss games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, and Nottingham Forest.

Alexis Mac Allister’s red card and three-game suspension for a foul on Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie were overturned after the Reds filed an appeal.

The suspension of Liverpool midfielder Phil Jones has been maintained, thus the Reds will be without him for the club’s next three domestic matches; he will be joined on the bench by Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese striker, who came in for the injured Cody Gakpo at halftime, will also miss Sunday’s trip to the Amex after being cautioned twice in quick succession for challenges on Destiny Udogie.

After an appeal to overturn the red card he got against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was denied, Liverpool announced that Curtis Jones will be suspended for three Premier League matches.

The challenge by the midfielder on Yves Bissouma in the 26th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium resulted in an early yellow card for the player. However, after review by the video assistant referee, the call was changed to a straight red.

Jones is now ineligible to play for Liverpool in their March matches against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, and Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Diogo Jota will miss Sunday’s trip to the American Express Community Stadium since he was also sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

Liverpool, playing with nine men for the final 25 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, hung out bravely until an own goal from Joel Matip in stoppage time handed Jurgen Klopp his first defeat of the season.

However, just after Jones was sent off, Luis Diaz had a decent goal disallowed for offside after the linesman had raised his flag and VAR officers Darren England and Dan Cook had failed to overturn the judgment.

On Tuesday night, the refereeing organization, the PGMOL, published audio evidence of the officials’ talks after admitting that a “significant human error” had been made at the time.

Before Jones and Jota begin their domestic suspensions, Liverpool will face Union SG in a Europa League group stage match on Thursday.
