The United players surrounded the referee in an effort to persuade him to call a foul.

The on-field choice made by Chris Kavanagh stood, and no penalty was given.

One supporter tweeted in response to the choice, saying: “The handball from Ward changed the path of the ball. VAR useless once more.

“Can someone explain to me why that wasn’t a handball from Ward?” said another.

A third partisan yelled, “How is that not a handball on Ward,” indignantly.

Make the handball rule make sense, that ball traveled 30 yards before it hit Ward’s hand and still no penalty, said another in the meantime.

United fell behind in the first half, and the choice ultimately determined the outcome.

The same opponents and place had just a few days earlier eliminated Palace from the Carabao Cup. Palace took the lead after 25 minutes thanks to a goal from Joachim Andersen.

Palace was successful in frustrating their rivals and keeping a lead throughout the entire game.
