The most recent Liverpool news has Jürgen Klopp providing an update on Cody Gakpo’s injury against Spurs and Jamie Carragher being unsatisfied with the VAR.
Liverpool’s 2-1 loss against Spurs on Saturday was marred by a late own goal from Jol Matip, an injury to Cody Gakpo, the mistaken erasure of a goal by Luis Daz, and red cards for Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota.
VAR has lost the respect of Jamie Carragher.
Even while the VAR ruled the on-field judgement was right, many Liverpool supporters, including Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher, knew Daz was onside before the PGMOL apologies arrived.
Darren England made a hasty, disastrous decision without properly drawing the lines. Liverpool’s 90 minute effort was really impressive, but the team still came away empty-handed. The Reds were subjected to every possible test, and they passed none of them.
Sky Sports did not have Carragher on as a commentator today, but he still managed to tweet, “When it takes this long for an answer from @FA_PGMOL over a contentious decision you know there’s been a **** up!”
“Shocking blunder, but this has nothing to do with the drawing of lines,” he subsequently said on the same platform. The VAR missed the Spurs center back and called Diaz off before the full back.
This season, officials have not drawn the lines when an offside was clearly a problem in an effort to keep games moving. It was a terrible error not to notice the Spurs defender who had his leg out.
Latest on the Cody Gakpo injury
Cody Gakpo, the Dutch striker who tied the game against Spurs on Saturday, was pulled off at halftime, and his coach, Jürgen Klopp, has issued an update on his condition. Earlier, Gakpo had been injured and was now unable to continue.
“After that shot, he felt it much more, even though he had just scored a goal. Klopp explained in the postgame news conference that the injury was caused by a previous foul. The greatest issue we had was before Cody scored when we were awarded a free kick and he was hurt; he is now hobbling down the hall with a brace on his leg.
That is, without a doubt, my most pressing issue right now. Two players were sent off and another may have followed suit; this was disastrous. That’s a problem, of course, and one that we’ll have to address.
Klopp was asked whether he thought the injury was a ‘terrible one’ from the get-go and he responded, “Possibly, I don’t know.”
If Gakpo were to be absent for longer than a week, Darwin Nez would make his way back into the lineup for Brighton. A slight injury kept the Liverpool attacker from starting against Spurs.
Both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota will miss the game due to suspensions. Since Thursday’s Europa League match against Union SG is in a different tournament, both players will be available.
