WONDERFUL: Tristan Thompson was appointed temporary guardian of his 17-year-old ill brother, Amari

For the time being, Tristan Thompson is looking after his younger brother, Amari.

.

On Wednesday morning, Thompson was appointed interim guardian of his 17-year-old brother by the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. Thompson, 32, has been awarded “all powers a parent having legal custody of a child would have,” according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

After their mother, Andrea, passed away in January, the NBA player filed for guardianship.

Thompson applied for guardianship since his younger brother required ongoing care due to medical issues, including epilepsy.

Additionally, the NBA free agent was given the authority to “manage ward’s finances and assets, travel with ward within the United States of America and internationally, enroll ward in social and other extracurricular activities, decide living arrangements of the ward, [and] obtain legal counsel on behalf of the ward,” according to the legal records.

After the court determined that Thompson had “sufficient evidence” and “good cause” to be designated as Amari’s interim guardian, Thompson was given the position.

On September 8, Thompson sent a petition to the court asking for sole legal custody of Amari.

According to court records acquired by PEOPLE, Thompson claimed that his younger brother had not seen their father, Trevor Thompson, since 2014. The father of four also said he was the person closest to Amari in the world.

Initial court records filed on September 8 stated, “Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment.”

It was further stated in the initial petition that “Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs.”

Thompson also expressed a desire to help his brother manage and invest their mother’s estate, telling the court as much.

Thompson and his ex-girlfriend Khloé Kardashian traveled to Toronto after learning of their mother Andrea’s deаth on January 5. Kardashian, 39, and Tristan, 33, are parents to True, 5, and Tatum, 13 months.

In the season two conclusion of The Kardashians, Kardashian revealed that her kid had developed a close relationship with Amari. Khloé has reportedly told their mother Kris Jenner and older sister Kim Kardashian that “[Tatum] likes Amari.”

Amari currently resides in Hidden Hills, California, with the ex-Cleveland Cavaliers player, as stated in the initial court records. After severe weather destroyed Thompson’s house, the brothers temporarily relocated to Khloé’s in Los Angeles before settling in Hidden Hills.

Khloé broke the news to Kim, 42, and her mother in the season finale of The Kardashians.

The SKIMS creator joked in response to the news: “Isn’t God just funny? You were all set to enjoy a year of freedom, and then Tristan and his younger brother had to come in with you, and then his roof caved in.

To which Khloé responded, “God does have a plan, and God doesn’t want him to be alone right now — and why should he be?” “You want to make God laugh, tell him your plans,” she continued, “is my No. 1 slogan I always use.”

Khloé has stated that she and Tristan have not reunited after their brief living arrangement.
