This evening, Liverpool welcomed Leicester City to Anfield in the third round of the English Football League Cup. The Reds got off to a sluggish start and found themselves down 1-0 after just three minutes when Kasey McAteer scored. The Merseyside club couldn’t respond, and they took a 1-0 deficit into the locker room at halftime.
Dominik Szoboszlai put the Reds ahead with a powerful strike in the 70th minute after Cody Gakpo had tied the game in the 48th with a neat finish. Diogo Jota scored the game-winning goal for Jurgen Klopp’s side with a spectacular backheel in the 89th minute.
Let’s evaluate how the various Liverpool players performed against Leicester.
Keeper: Caoimhin Kelleher, 6 out of 10
Kelleher didn’t have to make a save, but he still feels bad about the early goal.
6.5/10 for RB Curtis Jones.
He was solid defensively and created two late scoring opportunities.
Ibraaha Konate, CB: 6.5/10.
When the time came, Konate dealt with the threat head-on.
Jarell Quansah (7/10): CB
He was a solid presence on defense and did a fine job of protecting the goal. Quansah has been rewarded for his efforts with an assist.
Kostas Tsimikas, Long Snapper, 7/10
The Greek fullback contributed positively on offense and defense.
7/10 CM: Harvey Elliott
He was a constant threat in the attacking third and came close to scoring multiple times.
7.5/10 CM: Wataru Endo
The Japanese midfielder was a rock for his team and had a couple of good runs into the Leicester half. At the end of the contest, he had an assist to his name.
Ryan Gravenberch, CM; Score: 7/10
He helped set up some scoring opportunities for his team and even chipped in with an assist.
A 6.5/10 for RW Ben Doak
His quickness made things very difficult for the opposing defense. Doak, however, was not a particularly good scorer.
Cody Gakpo, ST: 8.5
Liverpool’s game was tied at 48 minutes thanks to a goal from Gakpo, who was a constant threat inside the Leicester penalty area.
Diogo Jota, 8.5/10 as LW
Jota put in a ton of hard work down the left flank and capped off his team’s three-goal effort with a spectacular backheel strike.

D. Nunez, ST, 7/10
Nunez made life difficult for the opposing defense, but he was unable to capitalize on any of his opportunities in front of goal.
