There are six Liverpool players who Jurgen Klopp has forbidden from touching the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign before games.
Since its first installation by Bill Shankly some 50 years ago, the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign has been revered all around European football as a symbol.
One of Shankly’s most quotable lines was inspired by the bold piece: “It’s there to remind our lads who they’re playing for and to remind the opposition who they’re playing against!”
Even after being changed three times throughout the years, the sign is still considered historic.
Liverpool’s 19 league titles, 9 European Cups, 8 League Cups, 8 FA Cups, 4 Super Cups, and 1 Club World Cup have all been won in front of it in the last decade alone.
As they enter the field, the current team routinely touches the sign.
The current state of affairs, however, means that six players have not yet acquired that right.
When Klopp first arrived at Liverpool in 2016, he famously said, “I’ve advised my players not to touch the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign until they win something!
It’s a respectful gesture. I had a hand in it while I was Borussia Dortmund’s manager, but we lost by the score of 4-0.

Free agent signings If the rule is still in place, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch are in violation for touching the sign.
Since the Reds did not bring home any hardware last season, neither Cody Gakpo, who signed with the team in January, nor Stefan Bajcetic, a promising prospect, are allowed to touch the tunnel sign.
